Writing Update August 2023

Calling all frequencies!

Ever heard of Ham Radio? No? Well, all you need to do is drive around the neighborhood and look for the massive antenna arrays in someone’s backyard. Peek behind the house and you’ll probably find a Hamshack. No, not a Loveshack, a Hamshack. You’ll be sure to find a guy inside with shelves of radios and wires coming out of everywhere. He’d be sitting in front of one of them, maybe in his skivvies, talking to Belgium through the airwaves. Yep. That’s Ham Radio, and it’s cool.

On a recent visit with friends out in New Hampshire, we stopped by and gawked at all the cool tech. Of course, most of it was over our heads, but we had fun anyway.

Okay, back to writing. As you know, I am in the middle of my series called “Demon Tide.” If you love dystopian adventures with a bit of a scary vibe, you’ll love this.

I am about a third of the way through writing book 3. It’s been SLOW going through this part, mainly because of the highly complex nature of the mission the teens are in. Matt (main character) and his sister Jenna have been tasked with retrieving an item, but the circumstances around obtaining it are tricky. Not only do they have to confront some pretty wicked (wicked evil, not like wicked cool all you New Hampshirians say), villains. Matt and Jenna are pushed far beyond their capacity of maturity and ability in a few scenes, and it results in some really tough decisions on their part.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world is falling apart at the seams. Governments are falling, wars are starting, and the Shadow World is behind it all.

I am really working on character development with this series. I want my characters to experience emotions on a wide spectrum, and feel suffering, joy, anger, and resentment that brings them to the brink of insanity.

So that’s all! I’m having fun writing this series, but it’s not an easy one. With that, I’m signing off! (And grabbing my Ham Radio)

Standing Against the Darkness

You see it every day. The people you work with, interact with at the grocery store, church, or on the road. Empty. Discouraged. Defeated.

If you were to stop and ask them, they might tell you it’s something they are going through–a family issue, some financial concerns, cancer. But like you, they know it goes deeper than that. There’s something wrong with the world today.

Never. Lose. Hope.

If you were like me, reading a book about Hell wasn’t the first on the TBR list. It might haven’t been ever on there, in fact, had I not forced myself to take a peek.
