Writing Update November 2023

You’re on the shores of a windswept beach. The moon strains to make its way through the sky amid the cloud-covered night, and a chilly breeze from the liquid expanse in front of you bites at your cheeks.

Except for the waves cresting some distance offshore, it is quiet. There isn’t a soul in sight. No condos line the beach. Thousands of acres of dense forest stretch behind you.

An odd noise swirls around you, soft and melodic, like thousands of tiny fairies singing in harmony. At first, it bristles your skin to hear it, but then you settle into the mesmerizing sound.

Welcome to the Singing Sands Beach, a remote unspoiled shoreline of unmatched beauty in the Keweenaw Peninsula of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. This is a land untouched by commercialization and regular foot traffic, but that doesn’t mean no one visits.

See, the singing sands are legendary, albeit eerie if you weren’t prepared to hear it. The noise is evident when you rub the sand between your fingers–a high-pitched sound that’s impossible to ignore.

It doesn’t happen all the time, but according to scientists and researchers of the phenomenon, that is because the moisture content in the sand has to be correct for it to occur. Others believe the legend from a Native American tale where it is said the singing originates from a woman calling out to her lover who was lost beneath the waves of Lake Superior.

What does this have to do with my writing update? Nothing, really! Except for the fact that I love exploring legends and telling stories. And, since you are my captive audience. Well, at least until you get bored and move on to TikTok!

DemonTide: Shadow World is finally coming along again. I got stuck on a particularly difficult part where a lot was happening. Without giving too much away, the MC, Matt, along with some other warriors have to infiltrate the mansion of a high-level government official who has given his allegiance to the Shadow World alliances. Their mission? Extract information from him by cutting out…well, I’ll just let you imagine the rest. Don’t worry, it won’t be a gross or inappropriate scene. I hope.

Truly, though, I have made a promise to God and several of my readers to keep my stories clean. Intense and thought-provoking, maybe, but clean. And the goal of every story is to always point to the most excellent storyteller of all. God.

I am about 35% of the way through the book. I’d love to send you a chapter or two to give me your thoughts.

With that, I’m signing off.

BTW: Really, I appreciate your willingness to read my updates. I can’t say that enough.

Standing Against the Darkness

You see it every day. The people you work with, interact with at the grocery store, church, or on the road. Empty. Discouraged. Defeated.

If you were to stop and ask them, they might tell you it’s something they are going through–a family issue, some financial concerns, cancer. But like you, they know it goes deeper than that. There’s something wrong with the world today.

Never. Lose. Hope.

If you were like me, reading a book about Hell wasn’t the first on the TBR list. It might haven’t been ever on there, in fact, had I not forced myself to take a peek.
